The great thing about having a dog around is that you always feel loved. All you have to do is walk out the door, turn around and go back in, and someone has missed you for weeks. Dogs are so easy to please and they will love you no matter what. On the other hand, if the dog belongs to your girlfriend's dad and you're only looking after it for about a week, you will come back to earth pretty quick once the real owner gets back. 'Cause once dad's back, then the dog doesn't see anyone else in the world.
